Mikhail Burtsev is a Soviet fencer who was born on 21 June, 1956 in Moscow, Russia. He is a two-time Olympic champion, having won gold medals in the team foil event at the 1980 and 1988 Summer Olympics. He also won a bronze medal in the individual foil event at the 1988 Olympics. Burtsev began fencing at the age of 12 and was coached by his father, who was a fencing master. He was a member of the Soviet national team from 1975 to 1989. He won the Soviet individual foil championship in 1979 and the team foil championship in 1980. Burtsev is currently the president of the Russian Fencing Federation. He is also a member of the International Fencing Federation's Hall of Fame. As of 2021, Mikhail Burtsev's net worth is estimated to be around $1 million.

1976

Burtsev was one of the youngest Olympic fencing champions, being only 20 years old when he won his first gold medal in Canada in 1976. Burtsev was unable to compete at the 1984 Summer Olympics because of the Soviet boycott of those games, but went on to win the silver medal in men's team sabre in the 1988 Summer Olympics. At the 1992 Summer Olympics, he coached the Unified Team fielded by the former Soviet Union, which took the gold medal at men's team sabre.

Burtsev began his fencing career in 1965; he originally fenced for Burevstnik, and later for CSKA Moscow. Burtsev was a graduate of the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism. He was named a Merited Master of Sport of the USSR (Заслуженный мастер спорта) in 1980.
