Mike Thornton was born in Farnham, United Kingdom, on 1 May 1952. He attended the University of Sussex, where he studied economics and politics. After graduating, he worked as a research assistant for the Liberal Democrats in the House of Commons. In 1997, Thornton was elected as a Member of Parliament for Eastleigh, Hampshire. He held the seat until 2015, when he was defeated by the Conservative candidate. During his time in Parliament, Thornton served as a member of the Treasury Select Committee and the Environmental Audit Committee. In addition to his political career, Thornton has also been involved in a number of charitable organisations. He is a patron of the Eastleigh and District Talking Newspaper, a charity which provides audio recordings of local newspapers to visually impaired people. He is also a patron of the Eastleigh and District Citizens Advice Bureau. As of 2021, Mike Thornton's net worth is estimated to be roughly $1 million.

His defeat at the 2015 general election was unexpected. Although he only defended a small numerical majority of 1,771, the Eastleigh constituency was otherwise a stronghold, with the Liberal Democrats holding almost every seat on the council for many years. During the 2013 by-election it had been reported that whilst the local Liberal Democrats commanded a vast database of supporters on the ground that enabled them to get their vote out, the local Tory organisation in the constituency was practically non-existent. Indeed, at the 2013 by-election the Conservatives had been beaten into third place by UKIP.

Following the resignation of the previous Liberal Democrat MP Chris Huhne, he was chosen as their candidate at the 2013 Eastleigh by-election to replace him. This took place on 28 February 2013 and Thornton was declared the winner in the early hours of 1 March.
