He was born in Jackson, Michigan, and graduated from Jackson High School in 1972. He attended Jackson Community College and then transferred to Central Michigan University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1976. Shirkey began his career in the automotive industry, working for General Motors and then for a local automotive supplier. He then founded his own business, Shirkey Enterprises, in 1984. He served as the company's president until his election to the Michigan Senate in 2010. In the Senate, Shirkey has served as the Majority Leader since 2017. He has been a strong advocate for fiscal responsibility and has worked to reduce government spending and taxes. He has also been a vocal supporter of Second Amendment rights and has opposed efforts to expand gun control. Shirkey is married to his wife, Mary, and they have two children. He is an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoys spending time outdoors.
