Michele Rosewoman is an American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader. She is the founder and artistic director of the New Yor-Uba ensemble, which combines elements of African and Cuban music. She has released several albums as a leader, including The In Side Out (1996), The Source (2002), and Quintessence (2008). Rosewoman was born in Oakland, California, and began playing piano at the age of five. She studied classical music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and jazz at the University of California, Berkeley. She has performed with a variety of jazz musicians, including Max Roach, Art Blakey, and Wynton Marsalis. Rosewoman has been a leader of her own ensembles since the early 1980s. She has also composed for film, television, and theater, and has been a guest lecturer at universities and conservatories around the world. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship.
