Michael Sommer is a German politician who has served as the President of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) since 2006. He was born on 15 January 1952 in Büderich, now part of Meerbusch, North Rhine-Westphalia. Sommer studied law at the University of Bonn and the University of Cologne, and received his doctorate in law in 1979. He then worked as a lawyer in Cologne until 1983. In 1983, Sommer joined the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) as a legal advisor. He was appointed as the DGB's Secretary General in 1994, and was elected as its President in 2006. Sommer has been a member of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) since 1975. He has also served as a member of the SPD's National Executive since 1998. Sommer is married and has two children.
