Michael D. West is an American entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He is the founder and CEO of AgeX Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focused on developing and commercializing novel therapies for age-related diseases. He is also the founder and chairman of BioTime, Inc., a biotechnology company focused on regenerative medicine and stem cell research. West was born in Niles, Michigan, and graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in biology. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of California, Berkeley. West began his career in the biotechnology industry in the early 1980s, working as a research scientist at Genentech. He then founded Geron Corporation in 1990, where he served as president and CEO until 1997. In 1998, he founded BioTime, Inc., and has served as its chairman since then. West has been a venture capitalist since 2000, and has invested in numerous biotechnology companies. He is also a member of the board of directors of several biotechnology companies, including AgeX Therapeutics, BioTime, Inc., and Ocata Therapeutics. West has received numerous awards and honors for his work in the biotechnology industry, including the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2000, the California Biotechnology Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006, and the California Life Sciences Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

Prior to joining BioTime, West was Chairman of the Board, Chief Scientific Officer and CEO of Advanced Cell Technology (ACT), another biotechnology company focused on stem cell research. ACT later changed its name to Ocata Therapeutics, and was acquired by Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma for US$379M or $8.50 per share in February 2016.

For the company's Scientific and Clinical Advisory Board, he recruited Günter Blobel (winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Physiology), Leonard Hayflick, Carol Greider (winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Medicine), James Watson (winner of the 1962 Nobel Prize in medicine), and others.

1989

In their telomerase research, West and colleagues at Geron cloned the RNA component of telomerase and collaborated with Thomas Cech (winner of 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry), with whom they cloned the catalytic component of the enzyme telomerase, and sponsored collaborative research in the laboratory of Carol Greider, then at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Geron published evidence of the role of telomerase in cancer and cell immortalization in collaboration with Woodring Wright and Jerry Shay at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
