Michael Arlen was born to Armenian parents in Ruse, Bulgaria, in 1895. He moved to England with his family in 1906, and attended the prestigious Harrow School. After graduating, he studied law at Trinity College, Cambridge, and was called to the bar in 1921. Arlen began writing in the 1920s, and his first novel, The Green Hat, was published in 1924. The novel was a huge success, and was adapted into a play and a film. He went on to write several more novels, as well as short stories, essays, and plays. In addition to his writing, Arlen was also a broadcaster and journalist. He wrote for The Times, The Observer, and The New Yorker, and was a regular contributor to BBC radio. Arlen died in 1956, at the age of 60. He was survived by his wife, the former actress and singer, Mary Ellis.
