Merzak Allouache is a French-Algerian filmmaker and actor. He is best known for his films Bab El-Oued City (1994), The Rooftops (1999), and The Repentant (2012). He has also acted in films such as The Battle of Algiers (1966) and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972). Allouache was born in Algiers, Algeria, in 1944. He studied at the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques in Paris, France, and began his career as an actor in the 1960s. He made his directorial debut in 1976 with the film Omar Gatlato. Allouache has since directed several films, including Bab El-Oued City (1994), which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and The Rooftops (1999), which won the Grand Prix at the Venice Film Festival. His most recent film, The Repentant (2012), was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Allouache is also a professor at the University of Algiers, where he teaches film studies. He is married to the actress and director Nadia Allouache.
