Matt Roney is an American professional baseball pitcher who currently plays for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He was born on 10 January, 1980 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States. Roney attended the University of Oklahoma, where he played college baseball for the Sooners. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the third round of the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft. Roney made his major league debut on April 5, 2004, against the Kansas City Royals. He pitched in relief and allowed one run in two innings. He finished the 2004 season with a 4.50 ERA in 24 appearances. In 2005, Roney was sent down to the minors and spent the entire season with the Toledo Mud Hens, the Tigers' Triple-A affiliate. He went 8-7 with a 4.45 ERA in 28 starts. Roney spent the 2006 season with the Tigers, appearing in 33 games and posting a 4.50 ERA. He was sent down to the minors in 2007 and spent the entire season with the Mud Hens. Roney spent the 2008 season with the Tigers, appearing in 33 games and posting a 4.50 ERA. He was released by the Tigers after the season and signed with the Colorado Rockies. He spent the 2009 season with the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. Roney signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010 and spent the season with their Triple-A affiliate, the Albuquerque Isotopes. He was released after the season and signed with the Baltimore Orioles. He spent the 2011 season with the Orioles' Triple-A affiliate, the Norfolk Tides. Roney signed with the Detroit Tigers in 2012 and spent the season with their Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens. He was called up to the majors in September and made two appearances for the Tigers. Roney spent the 2013 season with the Tigers, appearing in 33 games and posting a 4.50 ERA. He was released after the season and signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He spent the 2014 season with the Diamondbacks' Triple-A affiliate, the Reno Aces. Roney signed with the Detroit Tigers in 2015 and spent the season with their Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens. He was called up to the majors in September and made two appearances for the Tigers. Roney is currently a free agent. He has a career record of 4-4 with a 4.50 ERA in 66 appearances.

On April 30, 2007, Roney was suspended for 50 games for violation of baseball's minor league drug program. Roney tested positive for a "drug of abuse", which is separate from performance-enhancing drugs such as steroids or human growth hormone. After serving his suspension, Roney spent the rest of the 2007 season in the Blue Jays' farm system.
