Mathilde Krim is an Italian-American biophysicist, virologist, and activist. She is best known for her work in the field of AIDS research and for her activism in the fight against the disease. She was born on July 9, 1926 in Como, Italy, to a Jewish family. Krim studied biochemistry at the University of Milan and received her doctorate in 1953. She then moved to the United States, where she worked at the National Cancer Institute and the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research. In the late 1960s, she began researching the virus that causes AIDS, and in the 1980s she became a vocal advocate for AIDS research and education. Krim has received numerous awards for her work, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000. She is the founder and chair of the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), and she has served on the boards of numerous organizations, including the World Health Organization and the United Nations AIDS program. She is also a professor emeritus at the Weill Cornell Medical College. Krim is estimated to have a net worth of $20 million.
