Masao Adachi is a Japanese filmmaker, writer, and actor. He is best known for his work in the Japanese New Wave movement of the 1960s and 1970s. He is also known for his association with the Japanese Red Army, a militant leftist group. Adachi was born in Fukuoka, Japan, on 13 May 1939. He studied at the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he was a member of the avant-garde theater group, the Shinkankakuha. He began his career as a scriptwriter for the Nikkatsu studio in 1961. He wrote the screenplay for the film, "The Warped Ones" (1960), which was directed by Koreyoshi Kurahara. Adachi's first film as a director was "A.K.A. Serial Killer" (1969). The film was a critical success and was nominated for the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. He followed this with the films "The Red Army/PFLP: Declaration of World War" (1971) and "The Red Army Faction: A Documentary" (1972). Adachi's later films include "The Red Army Faction: A Documentary" (1972), "The Red Army Faction: A Documentary Part 2" (1973), and "The Red Army Faction: A Documentary Part 3" (1974). He also wrote and directed the film "The Red Army Faction: A Documentary Part 4" (1975). Adachi's films often explore themes of political violence and terrorism. He has been criticized for his sympathetic portrayal of the Japanese Red Army. Adachi is currently retired from filmmaking and lives in Tokyo. He is 82 years old.
