Martha Thorne is an American architect and academic. She was born on March 6, 1953 in the United States. She is currently the Executive Director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize and Dean of the IE School of Architecture and Design in Madrid, Spain. Thorne graduated from the University of Virginia in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture. She then went on to earn a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979. Thorne has held various positions in the field of architecture, including as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Virginia. She has also served as the Director of the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Dean of the College of Architecture at the University of Virginia. In 2005, Thorne was appointed as the Executive Director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the world's most prestigious architecture award. She is the first woman to hold this position. Thorne is the author of several books, including The Architecture of the City (1985), The Architecture of the Garden (1991), and The Architecture of the Landscape (1995).
