Mark Bernes was a Russian actor and singer who was active in the Soviet Union from the 1930s to the 1980s. He was born Mark Naumovich Neiman on October 8, 1911 in Nezhin, Chernigov Governorate, Russian Empire (now Nizhyn, Chernihiv Oblast, Ukraine). He was best known for his roles in the films The Cranes Are Flying (1957) and Ballad of a Soldier (1959). Bernes began his career as a singer in the 1930s, performing in the Moscow State Variety Theatre. He made his film debut in the 1936 film The Road to Life. He went on to appear in over 50 films, including The Cranes Are Flying, Ballad of a Soldier, and The Gadfly (1955). Bernes was also a prolific singer, recording over 500 songs. He was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1960 and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in 1971. He died on March 25, 1969 in Moscow, Russia.
