Marion Barry Jr. was an American politician who served as the second mayor of the District of Columbia from 1979 to 1991, and again as the fourth mayor from 1995 to 1999. He was also a civil rights activist and leader in the Democratic Party. Barry was born in Itta Bena, Mississippi, and grew up in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended LeMoyne-Owen College and Fisk University, and earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Fisk in 1958. He then moved to Washington, D.C., where he became involved in civil rights activism. In 1965, Barry was elected to the D.C. Board of Education, and in 1971 he was elected to the D.C. City Council. He was elected mayor of the District of Columbia in 1978, and served until 1991. During his tenure, he was credited with improving the city's economy and infrastructure, and with reducing crime. In 1994, Barry was re-elected mayor, and served until 1999. After leaving office, he was convicted of drug possession and served six months in prison. He was later pardoned by President Bill Clinton. Barry died on November 23, 2014, at the age of 78. He was survived by his wife, Cora Masters Barry, and four children.
