Mario Benedetti was a Uruguayan poet, novelist, playwright, journalist, essayist, and political activist. He was born in Paso de los Toros, Uruguay, on September 14, 1920. He studied law at the University of the Republic in Montevideo, but never practiced. Benedetti's literary career began in the 1940s, when he published his first poems in the magazine Marcha. He went on to write numerous novels, plays, and short stories, as well as essays and political commentaries. His works often dealt with themes of love, loneliness, and social injustice. Benedetti was a vocal critic of the Uruguayan military dictatorship, and his works were banned in the country during the 1970s and 1980s. He was also an active member of the Uruguayan Communist Party. Benedetti died in Montevideo on May 17, 2009, at the age of 88. He is remembered as one of the most important Latin American writers of the 20th century.
