Marilyn Bergman is an American lyricist, composer, and music publisher. She is a three-time Academy Award winner, and has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Bergman has written lyrics for over 1,000 songs, including the theme song for the television series Cheers. She has also written the lyrics for several Broadway musicals, including A Chorus Line and The Wiz. Bergman was born in New York City and grew up in the Bronx. She attended the High School of Music and Art and the Juilliard School of Music. She began her career as a songwriter in the 1950s, writing lyrics for popular songs such as "The Windmills of Your Mind" and "The Way We Were". Bergman has won three Academy Awards for Best Original Song, for "The Way We Were" (1973), "The Windmills of Your Mind" (1968), and "It Goes Like It Goes" (1979). She has also won two Grammy Awards, for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television (1973) and Best Song Written for Visual Media (1979). Bergman is married to composer Alan Bergman, and the two have collaborated on many projects. They have two children, a daughter and a son.
