Maria Borounov began her competitive ice dancing career in 1998, when she was 16 years old. She competed with partner David Mitchell, and the pair won the Australian National Ice Dance Championships in 2000 and 2001. In 2002, they placed fourth at the World Junior Championships. In 2003, Borounov and Mitchell moved to the United States to train with Igor Shpilband and Marina Zoueva. They competed in the Grand Prix series, placing fourth at the 2004 Cup of Russia and fifth at the 2004 Skate America. They also competed at the 2004 World Championships, where they placed 15th. In 2005, Borounov and Mitchell moved back to Australia and began competing on the international circuit. They placed fourth at the 2006 Four Continents Championships and fifth at the 2006 World Championships. They retired from competitive skating in 2007. Since retiring from competitive skating, Borounov has worked as a coach and choreographer.
