Marco Pannella was an Italian politician and activist who served as a Member of the European Parliament from 1979 to 1989. He was a leader of the Radical Party, a left-wing political party in Italy, and was a prominent figure in the Italian political scene for over 50 years. Pannella was born in Teramo, Italy, on 2 May 1930. He studied law at the University of Rome and was a member of the Italian Communist Party from 1948 to 1956. He left the party in 1956 and joined the Radical Party, which he led from 1967 to 2012. Pannella was a vocal advocate for civil rights and human rights, and was a leader in the movement to legalize abortion in Italy. He was also a strong proponent of environmentalism and animal rights. Pannella was elected to the European Parliament in 1979 and served until 1989. He was also a member of the Italian Senate from 1983 to 1987. Pannella died on 19 May 2016 at the age of 86. He was survived by his wife, Rita Bernardini, and their two children.
