He is best known for his work on the films The Best of Youth (2003), The Caiman (2006), and The First Beautiful Thing (2010). Amenta began his career as a cinematographer in the early 1990s, working on several short films and documentaries. In 2003, he made his feature film debut as a writer and director with The Best of Youth, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2006, Amenta wrote and directed The Caiman, which was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He followed this up with The First Beautiful Thing in 2010, which was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Amenta has also directed several television series, including the crime drama Romanzo Criminale (2008-2010) and the comedy series Una Grande Famiglia (2013-2014).
