Marcel Dupré was a French organist, composer, and pedagogue. He was born in Rouen, France, on 3 May 1886. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Alexandre Guilmant and Charles-Marie Widor, and was appointed organist of the Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris in 1910. He was professor of organ at the Paris Conservatoire from 1921 to 1954, and was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1937. Dupré was a virtuoso organist, and his compositions for the instrument are considered among the finest of the 20th century. He wrote several books on organ technique, and his pupils included Jean Langlais, Maurice Duruflé, and Marie-Claire Alain. He died in Paris on 30 May 1971.
