He began boxing at the age of 12 and had his first professional fight in 1998. He won his first world title in 2004 when he defeated Luis Maldonado to become the WBC Super Flyweight Champion. He successfully defended the title four times before losing it to Cristian Mijares in 2006. In 2008, Vargas won the WBC Bantamweight Championship by defeating Hozumi Hasegawa. He successfully defended the title three times before losing it to Fernando Montiel in 2010. Vargas has since fought in multiple weight classes, including super bantamweight, featherweight, and super featherweight. He has held multiple regional titles, including the WBC FECARBOX Super Bantamweight Championship and the WBC FECARBOX Featherweight Championship.
