Manuel Alegre is a Portuguese poet, novelist, and politician. He was born in Águeda, Portugal, on 12 May 1936. He studied law at the University of Coimbra and was a professor of Portuguese literature at the University of Lisbon. Alegre is a member of the Portuguese Communist Party and was a presidential candidate in the 2006 Portuguese presidential election. He was also a member of the Portuguese Parliament from 1975 to 1979 and from 1983 to 1995. Alegre has written several books of poetry, including "O Canto da Sereia" (The Song of the Mermaid, 1967), "O Canto do Povo" (The People's Song, 1972), and "O Canto da Terra" (The Song of the Earth, 1975). He has also written several novels, including "O Homem que Matou o Diabo" (The Man Who Killed the Devil, 1975) and "O Homem que Queria Ser Rei" (The Man Who Wanted to Be King, 1981). Alegre has received numerous awards for his work, including the Camões Prize in 2000, the Pessoa Prize in 2002, and the Prémio da Associação Portuguesa de Escritores in 2003. He was also awarded the Order of Liberty by the Portuguese government in 2006.
