Man o' War was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who is widely considered one of the greatest racehorses of all time. He was foaled on March 29, 1917, in Lexington, Kentucky, and was owned by August Belmont Jr. He was sired by Fair Play and out of Mahubah, a daughter of Rock Sand. Man o' War was trained by Louis Feustel and ridden by Johnny Loftus. He won 20 of 21 races, with his only loss coming in the 1919 Sanford Memorial Stakes. He won the Belmont Stakes, the Preakness Stakes, and the Jockey Club Gold Cup, among other races. He was voted the 1920 Horse of the Year and was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1957. Man o' War died on November 1, 1947, at the age of 30. He was buried at Faraway Farm in Lexington, Kentucky.

Man o' War retains such a renown even now (2012) that many Americans who don't follow horse-racing mistakenly assume he won the Triple Crown. In fact, owner Sam Riddle didn't enter him in the 1920 Kentucky Derby, publicly claiming that a horse shouldn't be asked to run one and a quarter miles in the spring of his 3-year-old season - even though just five weeks later Riddle ran Man o' War in (and won) the Belmont Stakes, then run at one and three-eighths miles (a mere 220 yards longer).
