Magic Alex was a Greek electronics engineer who worked with the Beatles in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was born Yanni Alexis Mardas in Athens, Greece, on 5 May 1942. He was a self-taught electronics engineer who had a passion for inventing and tinkering with electronics. Magic Alex was hired by the Beatles in 1967 to work on their Apple Corps venture. He was given a free hand to design and build whatever he wanted, and he created a number of innovative and sometimes bizarre inventions. These included a "dream machine" that was supposed to induce lucid dreaming, a "sonic laser" that was supposed to be able to cut through solid objects, and a "psychedelic wall" that was supposed to be able to project psychedelic images. Unfortunately, none of these inventions worked as promised, and Magic Alex was eventually fired from Apple Corps in 1969. He later moved to the United States, where he continued to work on electronics projects. He died in Athens in 2017.
