Ludwig Bemelmans was an Austrian-American writer and illustrator of children's books. He is best known for the Madeline picture books. He also wrote two novels, one autobiographical and one featuring the character Hansi. Bemelmans was born in Meran, Tyrol, Austria-Hungary (now Merano, Alto Adige, Italy). He was the son of Franz Bemelmans, a hotel manager, and his wife, the former Hedwig Ueberhorst. He had two brothers, Franz and Herman. Bemelmans attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where he studied painting and drawing. He left the academy in 1914 and moved to New York City in 1915. He worked as a commercial artist and illustrator for magazines and advertising agencies. In 1939, Bemelmans published his first children's book, Madeline. The book was an instant success and was followed by five sequels. Bemelmans wrote and illustrated several other children's books, including The Golden Basket (1941), The High-Wire Act (1943), and The Day the Cow Sneezed (1944). Bemelmans was also a successful playwright and screenwriter. He wrote the screenplay for the film The Story of Mankind (1957), which was nominated for an Academy Award. Bemelmans was married twice. His first marriage, to Madeleine Freund, ended in divorce. He married his second wife, Elizabeth Bemelmans, in 1945. They had two children, John and Barbara. Bemelmans died in New York City on October 1, 1962. He was 64 years old.
