Lowell Weicker Jr. is an American politician who served as the 85th Governor of Connecticut from 1991 to 1995. He was a member of the Republican Party until he left the party in 1990 and became an independent. He also served as a U.S. Senator from Connecticut from 1971 to 1989. Weicker was born in Paris, France, to American parents, Lowell Palmer Weicker and Mary Hastings Weicker. He attended the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, and graduated from Yale University in 1953. He served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. Weicker began his political career in 1962 when he was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives. He was re-elected in 1964 and 1966. In 1968, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served until 1971. In 1970, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served until 1989. In 1990, Weicker left the Republican Party and ran for governor as an independent. He won the election and served as governor from 1991 to 1995. After leaving office, he returned to the private sector and founded the Lowell P. Weicker Jr. Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting public policy initiatives. Weicker is currently 90 years old. He has an estimated net worth of $10 million.
