He was best known for his work on the films The Jazz Singer (1927), The Kid (1921), and The Great Dictator (1940). Bitzer began his career in the film industry in 1915, working as a camera assistant for the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a cinematographer in 1919. He worked on a variety of films throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including The Kid (1921), The Jazz Singer (1927), and The Great Dictator (1940). Bitzer was known for his innovative camera techniques, such as the use of the dolly shot and the use of the iris shot. He was also known for his use of natural lighting and his ability to capture the beauty of nature on film. Bitzer was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on The Great Dictator. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on The Jazz Singer. Bitzer died on April 15, 1976 in Los Angeles, California. He was 80 years old.
