Louis Auchincloss was an American lawyer, novelist, historian, and essayist. He was born on September 27, 1917 in Lawrence, New York. He attended Groton School and then went on to study at Yale University, where he graduated with a degree in English in 1939. After college, he attended the University of Virginia Law School, graduating in 1941. Auchincloss began his career as a lawyer, working in New York City for the firm of Sullivan & Cromwell. He wrote his first novel, The Indifferent Children, in 1947. He went on to write more than 50 books, including novels, short stories, biographies, and histories. His works often focused on the upper-class society of New York City. Auchincloss was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2003. Louis Auchincloss died on January 26, 2010 at the age of 92. His net worth at the time of his death was estimated to be around $10 million.
