Lothar Matthäus is a German football manager and former player. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the game. He was named European Footballer of the Year in 1990, and is the only German to have won the award. Matthäus began his career with Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1979, and went on to play for Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. He was a member of the German national team for 19 years, and captained the side to victory in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Matthäus retired from playing in 2000, and has since managed several clubs, including Maccabi Netanya, Partizan Belgrade, and the Hungarian national team.
