Lincoln Alexander was a Canadian politician, lawyer, and civil servant who served as the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1985 to 1991. He was the first black Canadian to be appointed to a viceregal position in Canada. Alexander was born in Toronto, Ontario, to West Indian immigrants. He attended the University of Toronto, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1945 and a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1948. He was called to the bar in 1949. Alexander served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, and was a member of the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada. He was a Member of Parliament for Hamilton West from 1968 to 1980, and served as Minister of Labour in the government of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau from 1979 to 1980. Alexander was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in 1985, and served until 1991. He was the first black Canadian to be appointed to a viceregal position in Canada. Alexander was awarded the Order of Canada in 1992, and was inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame in 2005. He died in 2012 at the age of 90.
