Lewis Morley was a British photographer and artist best known for his iconic portrait of Christine Keeler, which became an iconic image of the 1960s. He was born in Hong Kong on 16 June 1925 and died in London on 30 April 2013. Morley studied at the Royal College of Art in London and worked as a graphic designer before becoming a professional photographer in the 1950s. He was a pioneer of the ‘Swinging Sixties’, and his work was featured in magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Queen. Morley’s most famous photograph was taken in 1963 and featured Christine Keeler, a model and showgirl who was at the centre of the Profumo Affair, a political scandal that rocked the British government. The photograph was taken in Morley’s studio and featured Keeler sitting on a chair with her legs crossed. The image became an iconic symbol of the 1960s and was widely reproduced. Morley’s other works include portraits of celebrities such as The Beatles, David Bowie, and Mick Jagger, as well as fashion and advertising photography. He also created a series of abstract paintings in the 1970s and 1980s. Morley’s work has been exhibited in galleries around the world, including the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He was awarded an MBE in 2002 for his services to photography.
