Leslie Nielsen was a Canadian-American actor, comedian, and producer. He was best known for his deadpan delivery of jokes and his roles in the Naked Gun film series. He began his career as a serious actor in the 1950s, appearing in films such as Forbidden Planet and The Poseidon Adventure. He later transitioned to comedy roles, appearing in Airplane! and The Naked Gun series. Nielsen was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Ingvard Eversen Nielsen and Mabel Elizabeth (Davies). He was married to Alisande Ullman from 1950 to 1954, and to Brooks Oliver from 2001 until his death in 2010. He had two children, Maura and Thea Nielsen. Nielsen was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his performance in Airplane! (1980). He was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in Saturday Night Live (1985). Nielsen died on November 28, 2010, at the age of 84.

Older brother was a high-ranking Canadian politician. Erik Nielsen was a Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament (1957-87) for the Yukon Territory. He served as Leader of the Opposition (1983) and later rose to become the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada (1984-86). He died from a massive heart attack on September 4, 2008 in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.

Leslie William Nielsen was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, and raised in Tulita (formerly Fort Norman), Northwest Territories. His mother, Mabel Elizabeth (Davies), was Welsh. His father, Ingvard Eversen Nielsen, was a Danish-born Mountie and a strict disciplinarian. Leslie studied at the Academy of Radio Arts in Toronto before moving on to New York's Neighborhood Playhouse. His acting career started at a much earlier age when he was forced to lie to his father in order to avoid severe punishment. Leslie starred in over fifty films and many more television films. One of his two brothers became the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. On October 10, 2002, he was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada (OC) in recognition of his contributions to the film and television industries.
