Les Waters is a British theatre director and artistic director. He was born in Cleethorpes, United Kingdom in 1952. He is best known for his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Court Theatre, and the National Theatre. Waters studied at the University of Manchester and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He began his career as an assistant director at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1979. He then went on to become an associate director at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1984. In 1995, Waters was appointed artistic director of the Royal Court Theatre, where he directed a number of acclaimed productions, including Sarah Kane's Blasted and Caryl Churchill's Far Away. In 2003, he was appointed artistic director of the National Theatre, where he directed productions of plays by Shakespeare, Chekhov, and Ibsen, among others. Waters has won numerous awards for his work, including the Evening Standard Award for Best Director in 2003 and the Critics' Circle Award for Best Director in 2004. He is currently the artistic director of the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh.
