He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 21, 1922, and studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Chicago. Golub's work was heavily influenced by his experience in the military during World War II, as well as his interest in the human condition. His paintings often featured figures in violent or oppressive situations, and he was a vocal critic of the Vietnam War and other forms of political and social injustice. Golub's work was exhibited widely in the United States and Europe, and he was the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967. He died in 2004 in New York City.
