Orlando was born in Palermo, Sicily, on 1 August 1947. He studied law at the University of Palermo and graduated in 1971. He then worked as a lawyer and was elected to the Palermo City Council in 1975. In 1985, Orlando was elected mayor of Palermo and has been re-elected five times since then. He is known for his anti-mafia stance and has been credited with helping to reduce the influence of the mafia in Palermo. In 2006, Orlando was elected to the Italian Senate and has been re-elected twice since then. He is a member of the Democratic Party and is a strong advocate for the rights of immigrants and refugees.
