Lawrence Payton was an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He was a founding member of the Motown group The Four Tops, and was the group's main songwriter and lead vocalist. He wrote and produced many of the group's hits, including "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)", "Reach Out I'll Be There", and "Ain't No Woman (Like the One I've Got)". Payton was born in Detroit, Michigan, and began singing in church choirs as a child. He attended Detroit's Northwestern High School, where he met Levi Stubbs, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, and Renaldo "Obie" Benson, who would later become the other members of The Four Tops. Payton wrote and produced many of the group's hits, and was the group's main songwriter and lead vocalist. He also wrote and produced songs for other Motown artists, including The Supremes, The Temptations, and Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. Payton died on June 20, 1997, at the age of 59, from liver cancer. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004.
