Laurindo Almeida was a Brazilian-born American guitarist, composer, and arranger who was a major figure in the development of bossa nova and jazz fusion. He was a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. He was also a prolific session musician, appearing on hundreds of recordings by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Ella Fitzgerald. Almeida was born in Miracatu, São Paulo, Brazil, on September 2, 1917. He began playing guitar at the age of eight and studied classical guitar with his father. He moved to the United States in 1947 and quickly established himself as a sought-after session musician. He worked with a variety of jazz and pop artists, including Stan Kenton, Peggy Lee, and the Modern Jazz Quartet. In the 1950s, Almeida began to explore the possibilities of combining jazz and Brazilian music. He collaborated with Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on the classic bossa nova album, The Astrud Gilberto Album (1959). He also worked with jazz saxophonist Bud Shank to create the groundbreaking jazz fusion album, Brazilliance (1962). Almeida continued to record and perform throughout his career. He released several solo albums, including Laurindo Almeida Plays Baden Powell (1966) and Laurindo Almeida and the Bossa Nova All-Stars (1968). He also collaborated with jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd on the album, Brazilliance X 4 (1966). Almeida died on July 26, 1995, in Van Nuys, California. He was 77 years old.
