He is best known for his work in computational geometry, a field of mathematics that deals with the efficient representation and manipulation of geometric objects. He is a professor at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Vienna. Welzl was born in Vienna, Austria, and received his PhD in mathematics from the University of Vienna in 1981. He then went on to become a professor at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Vienna in 1988. Welzl has made significant contributions to the field of computational geometry, including the development of the Welzl algorithm, which is used to compute the smallest enclosing circle of a set of points.
