Kishori Amonkar was an Indian classical vocalist of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. She was known for her unique style of singing and her innovative approach to classical music. She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honour, in 2002. Kishori Amonkar was born in Bombay on 10 April 1932. She was the daughter of the renowned classical vocalist Mogubai Kurdikar, who was her first guru. She later trained under her mother's guru, Alladiya Khan. Kishori Amonkar was known for her unique style of singing, which was a combination of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana and her own innovations. She was also known for her improvisations and her ability to create new ragas. Kishori Amonkar was a recipient of numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan in 1989, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1985, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2002. She was also a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2004. Kishori Amonkar passed away on 3 April 2017 at the age of 84.
