Kingsley Amis was an English novelist, poet, critic, and teacher. He wrote more than 20 novels, six volumes of poetry, short stories, radio and television scripts, and works of social and literary criticism. He is best known for his novel Lucky Jim (1954). Amis was born in London, England, on April 16, 1922. He was the only son of William Robert Amis, a clerk in the Office of Works, and his wife, Rosa Annie (née Lucas). He was educated at the City of London School and St. John's College, Oxford, where he read English. Amis began his writing career as a poet, publishing his first collection of poems, Bright November, in 1947. He then turned to fiction, publishing his first novel, Lucky Jim, in 1954. The novel was an immediate success and established Amis as one of the leading writers of the post-war period. Amis went on to write more than 20 novels, including The Alteration (1976), The Old Devils (1986), and The Biographer's Moustache (1995). He also wrote six volumes of poetry, short stories, radio and television scripts, and works of social and literary criticism. Amis was awarded the Booker Prize in 1986 for The Old Devils. He was also made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1981 and was knighted in 1990. Kingsley Amis died on October 22, 1995, at the age of 73. He was survived by his wife, Elizabeth Jane Howard, and their two sons, Martin and Philip.
