Kim Plainfield is an American drummer, percussionist, composer, and educator. He is best known for his work with jazz and funk musicians such as Herbie Hancock, George Benson, and Stanley Clarke. He has also worked with pop and rock artists such as Madonna, David Bowie, and Billy Idol. Plainfield was born in Berkeley, California, and began playing drums at the age of nine. He studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and later at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He has released several albums as a leader, including "The Plainfield Project" (1985), "The Plainfield Sessions" (1989), and "The Plainfield Project II" (1995). Plainfield has been a member of the faculty at the Drummers Collective in New York City since 1989. He has also taught at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, the Manhattan School of Music, and the National Guitar Workshop. He has written several books on drumming, including "The Drummer's Bible" (1995) and "The Drummer's Guide to Groove and Independence" (1998). Plainfield is 63 years old as of 2021.
