Armstrong began his career as a session musician in the late 1970s, playing guitar on albums by artists such as The Stranglers, The Jam, and The Clash. He went on to work with David Bowie on the albums Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) and Let's Dance. He also worked with U2 on their album The Unforgettable Fire, and with The Smiths on their album The Queen Is Dead. In addition to his work as a session musician, Armstrong has released several solo albums, including A Little Bit of Heaven (1985), The Real Me (1989), and The Best of Kevin Armstrong (1995). In 2007 he was guitarist on a world tour with Sinéad O'Connor and in 2010 he played on new material with Thomas Dolby and toured the world in 2012 as Dolby's guitarist. In 2015/6, he put together and led the band for Iggy Pop's live appearances worldwide.

Armstrong was a co-songwriter ("Piccadilly Palare", "He Knows I'd Love To See Him" and "Oh Phoney") and guitarist for Morrissey for some of the recordings that appeared on the album Bona Drag produced by Clive Langer. In 1992 he produced the debut album by Nigerian artist Keziah Jones for Delabel France entitled Blufunk Is A Fact. Later he produced other albums for Jones, Black Orpheus (2004), Nigerian Wood (2008) and Captain Rugged (2013).
