He has released over 40 albums, and has composed music for films, television, and theater. He has also written several books, including novels, poetry, and non-fiction. Bjørnstad was born in Oslo, Norway, and began playing the piano at the age of five. He studied classical music at the Norwegian Academy of Music, and later studied jazz and improvisation at the University of Oslo. He has collaborated with many renowned musicians, including Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, and Jon Christensen. Bjørnstad has received numerous awards, including the Norwegian Music Critics Award, the Norwegian Music Council's Honorary Award, and the Norwegian Jazz Federation's Honorary Award. He was also awarded the Order of St. Olav in 2004.
