Kent Haruf was born in Pueblo, Colorado, on February 24, 1943. He attended the University of Northern Colorado, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1965. He then went on to earn a master's degree in English from the University of Iowa in 1967. Haruf began his writing career in the 1970s, publishing his first novel, The Tie That Binds, in 1984. He went on to write several more novels, including Plainsong (1999), Eventide (2004), and Benediction (2013). He also wrote a collection of short stories, The Collected Stories of Kent Haruf (2015). Haruf's work has been praised for its vivid descriptions of rural life in the American West. He has won numerous awards, including the Whiting Writers' Award, the Mountains & Plains Booksellers Award, and the Wallace Stegner Award. Haruf passed away on November 30, 2014, at the age of 71.
