He is a two-time Olympic medalist, having won a silver medal in the Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. He is also a three-time World Champion, having won gold medals in the Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1983 World Championships in Kiev and the 1987 World Championships in Clermont-Ferrand, and a silver medal in the Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1985 World Championships in Karl-Marx-Stadt. He is also a four-time European Champion, having won gold medals in the Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1982 European Championships in Athens, the 1984 European Championships in Budapest, the 1986 European Championships in Leningrad, and the 1988 European Championships in Varna.
