Kenan Evren was a Turkish military officer and politician who served as the seventh President of Turkey from 1980 to 1989. He was the leader of the 1980 military coup and the leader of the National Security Council from 1980 to 1989. He was also the Chief of the General Staff from 1978 to 1983. Evren was born in Alasehir, Saruhan Beylik, Ottoman Empire (now Alasehir, Manisa, Turkey) on 17 July 1917. He attended the Turkish Military Academy in 1937 and graduated in 1940. He then served in the Turkish Army during World War II and the Korean War. Evren was appointed Chief of the General Staff in 1978 and led the 1980 military coup. He was elected President of Turkey in 1980 and served until 1989. During his presidency, he implemented a number of economic and political reforms. He also oversaw the passage of a new constitution in 1982. Evren retired from politics in 1989 and died on 9 May 2015 at the age of 97. He was buried in the State Cemetery in Ankara.
