Ken Blackwell is an American politician, diplomat, and conservative activist. He served as the Ohio Secretary of State from 1999 to 2007, and was the Republican nominee for Governor of Ohio in 2006. He is currently a senior fellow at the Family Research Council and a senior advisor to the Trump campaign. Blackwell was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and attended Xavier University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. He then attended the University of Cincinnati College of Law, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree. Blackwell began his political career in the Ohio House of Representatives, where he served from 1979 to 1982. He then served as the Hamilton County Treasurer from 1983 to 1990, and as the Ohio State Treasurer from 1990 to 1994. In 1994, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served until 1999. In 1999, Blackwell was elected Ohio Secretary of State, and he served in that position until 2007. During his tenure, he implemented a number of reforms, including the establishment of a voter ID system and the implementation of a system to track campaign contributions. In 2006, Blackwell was the Republican nominee for Governor of Ohio, but he was defeated by Democrat Ted Strickland. After leaving office, Blackwell served as a senior fellow at the Family Research Council and as a senior advisor to the Trump campaign.
