Juozas Žemaitis was a Lithuanian military officer and politician who served as the first Prime Minister of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic from 1940 to 1941. He was born on 30 August 1926 in the village of Šiluva, Lithuania. He joined the Lithuanian Army in 1945 and served in the Soviet Army from 1945 to 1947. He then joined the Lithuanian Communist Party and was elected to the Central Committee of the Lithuanian Communist Party in 1950. In 1952, he was appointed as the first Prime Minister of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic. He served in this position until his death in 1961. Juozas Žemaitis was a highly decorated military officer and was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, and the Order of the Red Star.
