Julius Baker was an American flutist, conductor, and teacher. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and began playing the flute at the age of nine. He studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Juilliard School of Music, and was a member of the Cleveland Orchestra from 1937 to 1942. He then joined the U.S. Navy, where he served as a bandmaster. After the war, he returned to the Cleveland Orchestra and served as principal flutist from 1946 to 1968. Baker was a renowned teacher, and taught at the Juilliard School of Music, the Eastman School of Music, and the Curtis Institute of Music. He was also a conductor, and conducted the New York Woodwind Quintet, the New York Chamber Symphony, and the American Wind Symphony. Baker was a recipient of the National Medal of Arts, and was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2006. He died in 2003 at the age of 87.
