Julie Heffernan is an American painter and professor of art at Montclair State University in New Jersey. She is best known for her surrealist self-portraits, which often feature her in elaborate costumes and settings. Heffernan has exhibited her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. Heffernan was born in 1956 in Peoria, Illinois. She received her BFA from the University of Kansas in 1979 and her MFA from the Yale University School of Art in 1983. She has taught at Montclair State University since 1989. Heffernan's work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Heffernan has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant. She lives and works in New York City.
